However, every glass panel and door configuration is different. The size of the panel, its position within the frame and the available space around the proposed opening all affect whether a pet door can be installed.

Why Does the Existing Glass Usually Need to Be Replaced?
Customers frequently ask whether a hole can simply be cut into their existing glass. In most glass doors, this is not possible.
Most modern glass doors contain toughened safety glass. Once glass has been toughened, it cannot be cut, drilled or altered without causing the entire panel to break. The opening for the pet door must therefore be made before the new glass goes through the toughening process.
Laminated glass is also not suitable for Hartley Glass pet door installations.
In most cases, we will measure the existing panel and order a new custom-made toughened safety glass panel. The pet door opening is cut into the glass during manufacture and before the panel is toughened.
When the new glass is ready, our glazier removes the existing panel, installs the replacement panel and fits the pet door into the prepared opening. This produces a cleaner and more professional result than attaching a temporary pet door panel to the end of a sliding door.
Toughened Safety Glass and Australian Standards
Glass installed in and around doors must meet important safety requirements.
AS 1288 requires glazing in doors and within 300 mm of a doorway to be Grade A safety glass. Where a glass panel needs to be replaced for a pet door, Hartley Glass supplies a suitable custom-made toughened safety glass panel in accordance with the applicable Australian Standards.
Toughened glass is significantly stronger than ordinary annealed glass. If it is broken, it is designed to fragment into relatively small pieces rather than the large, sharp shards associated with ordinary glass.
Having the pet door opening prepared before the glass is toughened maintains the integrity of the replacement panel and provides a professional, purpose-made installation.

Extra-large rectangular dog door
Our extra-large rectangular dog door is available in black or white. It is intended for larger dogs or animals that cannot comfortably use the large round opening.
Your pet’s height
Because animals of the same breed can vary considerably in height, width and build, we do not recommend choosing a pet door based solely on a breed list.

Lockable Pet Doors
All pet doors supplied by Hartley Glass can be locked using their fitted plastic lock or clips. Depending on the pet door you select, you may also be able to control how the flap operates, such as restricting access when you want your pet to stay inside.
These fittings are intended to control your pet’s use of the opening. They should not be treated as a substitute for the primary locks and security measures used on your doors and windows.
Our glass-installed pet doors avoid the large removable gap associated with some temporary sliding-door insert systems and allow the original door to continue closing in its normal position.

Lockable Cat Door Options
Our cat doors include plastic locks or clips that allow you to restrict access when you need your cat to remain inside. These controls are useful overnight, during bad weather or whenever access to the outdoor area needs to be limited.
The cat-door lock controls your pet’s access through the opening, but it should not replace the normal security locks fitted to your windows and doors.

Pet door sizing is best determined onsite because dogs within the same breed can differ in size and build. If you are uncertain, have your pet available when our glazier visits and ask for advice.
Are the pet doors lockable?
